People must make decisions every day. When choosing a solution to a problem, we use critical thinking to consider consequences and other details. The better it is developed, the more logical our actions will be. Therefore, improving the ability to think critically is a very reasonable goal. But how to do that?
It is believed that robots can easily choose the best solution to a problem. This is because they don’t feel emotions. After all, emotions are the main enemy of logic. It is impossible to completely get rid of them. Nevertheless, this is not necessary. It is enough just to develop certain skills and practice them.
What do you need to be able to think critically?
- Gather information
Before making any decision, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with all the input data. If you miss even a small detail, the consequences can be irreversible. Gather as much information as possible about the situation to properly weigh the pros and cons.
- Develop logic
Logical laws, contradictions, and exceptions will leave no doubt in choosing a solution to the problem. Rational thinking will make your life much easier.
Creative thinking will be a useful tool for seeing even the most non-obvious ways to solve a problem. Any creative activity will help to develop skills like drawing, music, dancing, etc.
- Comparison and analogy
The ability to draw analogies will simplify the choice of option. No need to reinvent the wheel. Perhaps, your situation is not unique, and the solution has long been invented.
- Causal relationship
Realize that there is always cause and effect. Understanding this will allow you to calculate the result of your choice and eliminate or at least minimize the likelihood that the problem will occur again.
It sounds easy, but it’s actually quite a complicated process. Sometimes, it is simply impossible to take into account all factors. However, this does not prevent us from following the law “First think about the consequences, and then act.”
Getting your priorities right is a very important skill in itself. It will allow you to find the best option. And still, it is worth considering that not all people have the same priorities. In fact, they define our essence. For example, friends invite you to a bar, but you were going to take your family to a restaurant. What would you choose?
It is time to sum up all the thoughts and make a decision. But that’s not all. Think about what conclusions you have drawn and what you have learned.
Keep these actions in mind and try to apply them whenever the need arises. Practice will help improve critical thinking to the highest level. And yet, it is worth remembering that a person is not a robot. We tend to err. You just need to take your mistakes as a lesson. Learn their reasons, don’t repeat them, and making decisions will be much easier. Remember that it’s never too late to learn!
